Slater PR does school newsletters with a difference 29.03.2010

When Accrington Academy rang Slater PR up and asked for our help in putting together a new, regular newsletter for its students, staff and parents we saw a golden opportunity to do something a bit special – and the result is an eight-page newsletter written, designed and produced by the kids themselves.

The glossy mag has been compiled by five Year 11 media students and contains news updates from throughout the school, a parents’ guide to understand stereotypes and advice for surviving Year 7.

Our involvement (other than to suggest someone else did it for us) was to run three sessions with the students, covering topics such as deciding what type of material makes a good news story, understanding the basics of newspaper design and a guide to editing and production.

We also helped the students liaise with our design team and artworkers who constructed the newsletter from the students’ brief and raw materials.

Head of Media Philip Haydock said: “The project has been a huge success with the students. Initially we just wanted to improve our communication, but thanks to the involvement of Slater PR this has turned into a regular project which gives the individuals involved the chance to create a real product which they can take pride in, and the opportunity to speak to a genuine business on level terms – invaluable experience at this age.”

Here’s how the magazine turned out, in the clutches of the students who put it together.
