Keen to show his support, Alex spent the evening behind the wheel of a racing car, on a barber’s chair and was grilled by Blackburn College students in an Apprentice themed mock interview.
In a spoof exercise, students took great pleasure in making Alex squirm in the hot seat as they took on Sir Alan Sugar’s role, bombarding Alex with entrepreneurial themed questions to help their interview techniques.
The twenty-eight year old from Westhoughton, Bolton, said: “It’s fantastic to see that Blackburn College is responding to our changing society; these new courses and alternative subject areas reflect what student’s want to study and complement the new jobs that are on the market.
“There will always be a need for traditional subjects like maths, science and English, but similarly, there will always be a need for plumbers, hairdressers and mechanics and these practical job related courses will provide students with the necessary skills and qualifications.”
Alex, who studied Managerial Business and Administrative studies at Aston Business School, said that students are more likely to do well if they are interested in the subject they are studying, as maximum effort will always lead to maximum results.
“By introducing these new courses Blackburn College is giving students more options to study something they are interested in and they will therefore be more likely to succeed in their chosen career.”
“One person’s definition of success may be completely different to another person’s - everyone has the ability to be successful in their own right and with so many courses on offer there really is something for everyone,” said Alex.
On a tour around the campus, Alex got a glimpse of the brand new University Centre at Blackburn College and commented on how the local community can benefit from higher education without having to leave the area.
Alex said: “I think it’s fantastic that students can join the College after school and five years later they can leave with not only further education but higher education qualifications under their belts.
“One of the most important aspects of choosing a place to study is its campus life and sense of community because in order to do well academically, it is important to have a wholesome social life as well; it’s great that everything is under one roof here.
“There is such a great pool of talent on offer in Pennine Lancashire and Blackburn College is a fundamental part of this community; by improving their career prospects and encouraging their potential, the quality of people’s lives, they are more likely to stay in the area.”
Ian Clinton, Principal at Blackburn College, said: “The new courses are unique to this area and will provide candidates with a real opportunity to study and progress into higher education.
“The courses will be building on the successes of our existing higher education programmes with many learners going onto develop the skills and knowledge required for employment or University.”
