Pedal power generates money for charities 05.06.2009

Cycling enthusiast Carl Varley completed the gruelling 81 mile challenge around Scotland’s Highland Perthshire in four hours, thirty-six minutes finishing 181 out of 3,500 competitors and raised £800 from over 50 donators, including Soreen Malt Loaf, Chris Hoy’s official sponsor.

Soreen Malt Loaf, part of the Blackburn based McCambridge group at Sett End Road, is one of Blackburn-based Neales’ biggest clients and when they heard about Carl’s two-wheeled challenge, they pledged £250 and donated the Olympians cycling strip and cake supplies to fuel his trip.

Carl, who lives in Blackburn with his partner and their four-year-old daughter Libby, said: “It was a fantastic experience and was certainly the biggest cycling challenge I’ve done so far.

“I got a great sense of satisfaction when I crossed the finish line and it’s a huge feeling of achievement in taking part in such a great challenge, especially knowing that the money I’ve raised is supporting such a worthy cause.”

Chorley based charity, St. Catherine’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer support will each be receiving half of the money raised by Carl.

“I’ve been training for the race since the start of the year, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do and I definitely want to do it again next year,” Carl finished.

Alison Dunn, marketing manager, Soreen Malt Loaf, said: “We’re pleased to support Carl in his challenging and worthwhile event.

“Soreen consumers tell us that enjoy our malt loaf as part of their training diet for endurance events as it’s high in carbohydrate but low in fat. It also helps that it tastes great, even without any butter!”

This year’s Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia took place on Sunday 17th May and saw over 3,500 cycling fanatics complete the race, raising over £200,000 for various cancer charities.
